India continues to face the challenge of undernutrition and anaemia among women, which has long-term effects on maternal and child health. Recognizing this, the Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY)—a maternity benefit scheme designed to support pregnant and lactating women, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds. As part of Mission Shakti, the scheme reflects the nation’s commitment to women-led development and the holistic well-being of mothers and children.
What is PMMVY?
Launched in January 2017, PMMVY is implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development under the Samarthya sub-scheme. It provides financial incentives to expecting and new mothers to improve nutrition, promote institutional deliveries, and encourage positive attitudes toward the girl child.
Key Benefits of PMMVY
- Financial Support: ₹5,000 for the first child and ₹6,000 for the second child if it is a girl.
- Linked Schemes: Integrated with Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), allowing eligible women to receive nearly ₹6,000 in total benefits.
- Nutritional Security: Encourages rest, recovery, and exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months.
- Gender Equality: Incentives for the second girl child aim to improve the sex ratio at birth and strengthen attitudes towards daughters.
How the Scheme Works
Eligible women can enroll via:
- The PMMVY portal: pmmvy.wcd.gov.in
- The UMANG app: web.umang.gov.in
Required documents include the Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card and proof of eligibility (such as a BPL card).
Digital Reforms for Transparency
The scheme has embraced technology through PMMVYSoft, a digital monitoring platform launched in 2023. Key features include:
- Aadhaar-based authentication and real-time Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
- Biometric and facial recognition verification to prevent fraud.
- Paperless reporting by field workers through mobile apps.
- Beneficiary updates via SMS in 12 languages.
- A multilingual helpline (14408) and integrated grievance redressal system.
Why PMMVY Matters
By addressing wage loss, promoting institutional deliveries, and encouraging breastfeeding and nutrition, PMMVY goes beyond financial aid. It empowers women to take better care of themselves and their newborns while supporting the broader goal of women-led development in India. The special focus on girl children under PMMVY 2.0 also strengthens the government’s efforts to build a more gender-balanced society.
PMMVY: Building Stronger Mothers, Stronger India
The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana is not just a scheme—it’s an investment in healthier mothers, stronger children, and a more equitable India. With digital innovations, transparent governance, and grassroots support, PMMVY continues to uplift women and shape generations to come.
