Mexican food can be a lot to take in at first. There are just so many interesting dishes and flavors to try out. Burrito & Enchilada are the two dishes that are most popular in Mexican dishes. The two dishes you’re thinking of are both wrapped in tortillas and taste great. But how do they differ?
- What are burritos?
- What are enchiladas?
- Here are some famous Burrito & Enchiladas that you must try.
What are burritos?
Burritos are a type of Mexican dish traditionally made with a flour tortilla, filled with a variety of ingredients, such as seasoned meat, cheese, beans, rice, salsa, and sour cream. Burritos are usually wrapped in a cylindrical shape and can be served hot or cold. Some burritos are also topped with guacamole, sour cream, or hot sauce. Burritos can be eaten as a meal or as an appetizer.
While there are regional variations of burritos, their basic definition is a flour tortilla that’s tightly wrapped around a filling. Commonly, these include some mix of meat (usually beef & chicken) and refried beans. But all these other things can also be added, from rice, sauteed bell peppers, and guacamole to cheddar cheese and shredded lettuce. And of course the classic chile relleno.
Its name actually comes from the infinite number of possible ingredients, and the word “burrito” literally means “little donkey” in Spanish. The origin of the phrase is unknown, but it likely refers to how many ingredients are in a burrito. It’s also easy to connect this analogy to the donkey carrying all its burdens on its back. (Skipping the tortilla from a burrito won’t mean sacrificing its flavor of it.)
What are enchiladas?
Enchiladas are a type of Mexican dish made with corn tortillas that are stuffed with a variety of fillings such as cheese, chicken, beef, seafood, beans, or vegetables, and then rolled up and covered in a chili sauce. The dish is then typically topped with additional cheese, lettuce, olives, sour cream, and other garnishes.
The tortillas are usually covered with tomatoes & chilies. In fact, the spicy addition is right there in the name, as enchilada is the past participle of the Spanish verb “to season (or decorate) with chili.” There are two options for enchilada sauce: red-based or green based on tomatillos.
So, what happens if you put chili on a burrito wrapped in a tortilla? Do they become enchiladas? Technically not as it has a flour tortilla. Some variations on the burrito include wet and/or smothered versions. The names may not be the most appetizing, but they definitely mark this distinction. If you’re feeling especially indulgent, you could make a deep-fried burrito.
